I have a deep fascination with maps. As a child, I spent hours looking through atlases and dreaming of far away places. Globes were spun and studied. Classroom maps couldn’t escape my attention either. Old-school Rand McNally paper maps were removed from my parents’ cars and refolded beyond recognition. Once I became a homeowner, I began collecting vintage globes. Names and borders of countries changed, but my obsession with the world did not.
For me, maps don’t just represent geography. They are visual representations of my past. Spotting China brings back memories of walking along the Great Wall, and the sight of Italy makes my mouth water for Tuscan wine and carbonara. Seeing the familiar shape of Texas makes my heart full, while France makes me think to the future. Like art, maps mean different things to different people, evoking emotions based on personal experiences. I appreciate that as time passes and trips are taken, my perceptions continue to evolve, making my experiences with maps evergreen.
